New students to UH–Downtown are first admitted into University College. This college is responsible for their academic progress until they officially declare a major field of study and have an official degree plan approved. Students are encouraged to officially declare a major when they have completed 30 to 60 credit hours. For additional information, contact the Office of the Dean of University College.

Academic Advising Center

Advisors in the Academic Advising Center assist UH–Downtown students in completing the university’s general education curriculum, selecting courses each semester and deciding upon a major field of study. The Center also assists students with filing degree plans and obtaining evaluations of previous college and university courses.

Academic Counseling Center

Academic counselors are available to provide assistance and guidance to students on academic issues. Counselors work with students on setting goals, managing time, and dealing with unforeseen difficulties that may jeopardize academic success. Support programs are also available to help students with physical or learning disabilities.

Academic Outreach Programs

UH–Downtown offers a variety of programs in cooperation with area high schools to encourage high school students to continue their education after graduation and to prepare them to succeed at the college level. These programs provide intensive training in reading development, English composition, critical thinking and analysis, and specific preparation in mathematics and the natural sciences. In addition, the UH–Downtown Summer Scholars Program offers selected high school students the opportunity to enroll for college courses and earn college credit the summer between their junior and senior years of high school.
